just leave me your stardust to remember you by

My sister has injured herself playing video games again and can't lift her arm above her shoulder. Consequently, she's invaded my room and started organizing all of my DVDs, CDs, and books in alphabetical order for her entertainment. At the moment she's baffling her way through whether the mixes should all go under M or slot in by their title. Outside, there's a group of children having a 'who can scream the loudest, longest, shrillest' contest. I think the little girl who sounds remarkably like a barking dentist drill is winning.

To distract me from this fresh hell, let's play a mingling game. Since a bunch of you are new to my flist, or newish enough that we haven't gotten to know each other yet, you tell me a bit about yourself and then ask me anything you'd like to know about me - fannish or not. Even if you're not so new, jump right in anyway.

Here's a handy dandy copy&paste guide to get you started, but don't feel obligated to use it if you'd rather ramble nonsensically for a bit. :>

Because everyone on the internet should know, and also, embarrassing secrets are the fastest way to get to know one another: I, uh, like Hannah Montana an awful lot (in my defense, we share the same first name). And also Miley Cyrus' current single. (Should I hate myself more for liking it or actually admitting it in a public forum?)

Most likely to respond to this name: Hannah Montana, actually. It's my nickname at work.
Milk chocolate or white chocolate? BOTH. Together.
Current favorite song: Josh Turner - Another Try, Miley Cyrus - See You Again, Missy Higgins - Where I Stood
An abbreviated fannish history: LOTR messageboards -> HP on LJ -> SGA also on LJ.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? MORE. Anyone know the Addy books from American Girl? After reading about a scene where she was made to eat worms off a tobacco plant, I immediately had to eat peas, and now I'm scarred for life because they felt like the worms were described.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? Depends. What else are we wearing?
Most satisfying book to reread: I'm A Stranger Here Myself, by Bill Bryson. Cracks me up every time.
Shows you're currently watching: SGA, How I Met Your Mother, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Hannah Montana, America's Next Top Model.
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? YYYYYYYYYYY
Questions: No, actually, I love hearing about how people got into fandom in general/their current fandoms. That, or any embarrassing tidbits, since I shared mine. ;)

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
We are probably wearing some kind of fuzzy pant-and-shirt combo with penguins on it. Because that's how we roll.

I did a highly simplified time line of my fandoms above, but if you want more detail, it's over here (http://unamaga.livejournal.com/218965.html#cutid1).

Oh man, embarrassing tidbits? There are so many things about me that are embarrassing. When I was really little (nursery school little) I was lactose intolerant because of some medicine I was taking and they cast me as the cow that jumped over the moon. I was so upset that I hid in the bathroom for hours and they had to get my mom out of work to talk me out because I'd figured out how to lock the door and stick a chair under it so no one could get in without breaking it down.

Found the post amusing and thought I'd comment. My current fave song is "Love Song" by Sara Bereilles. Sorry if I spelled her name wrong. Check out scrink.com if you want to hear some awesome music. I write music reviews...sorry about your sisters video game illness. =o)

Most likely to respond to this name: Jenna and/or Jinna (my little sister couldn't pronouce it right when she was a kid and the former pronounciation just stuck. More often than not I call myself Jinna, leading to confusion when I answer the phone at work ("I'm looking for, ah, Jenna -- is that you or--?")
Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Neither, allergic. But when I cease to care about getting sick, I eat milk chocolate. Mostly in the form of hot fudge and m&ms.
Current favorite song: Oh, dear. Today, Such Great Heights (the Iron & Wine cover), mostly because I can't stop humming it.
An abbreviated fannish history: Harry Potter (Ron and Hermione), CSI (Nick and Greg), various other crime scene dramas, SGA (John/Rodney, Rodney/Teyla -- came into this one telling everyone loudly that I wouldn't like it, and look, four years later...)
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? They're both the same level of evil.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? No opinion either way ;)
Most satisfying book to reread: I would lie and say something that makes me look smart, but really, it's the HP series. Followed by Narnia.
Shows you're currently watching: Right this very moment I'm watching SG-1 S5. Shows I watch include not a lot, because I don't have cable. I watch TV at work when I can, mostly sports.
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? Y-cubed.
Questions:Quick -- Ford or Ronon?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man I LOVE the Iron & Wine cover of that song - almost more than I love the original. :o It's just so soothing and romantic and, sighhhh. Yay.

RONON, ftw. I liked Ford - more now during rewatches than in the beginning - but he just didn't fit as well as I think Ronon does. Also, Ronon has the best comedic timing ever; I think I fell for him during that scene where he takes out his blaster and shows John what a real man can do to a paper target.

An abbreviated fannish history: Discovered Firefly. Firefly no more. Discovered Firefly fanfic and fandom. Discovered SGA fanfic through favourite Firefly author. Read McShep fanfic before seeing the show. Got corrupted by SPN.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? LESS.
Bunny slippers - hot or not?Depends who'd wearing them!
Most satisfying book to reread:The Lord of the Rings.
Shows you're currently watching:SPN, SGA, Chuck, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Doctor Who (am only fannish about the first two)
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n?1000% YES
Questions:What's your favourite thing you've written? What do you think I should know about you?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
What if Rodney McKay were wearing bunny slippers? I think that would zoom right past hot and into 'ow, ow, my ovaries, unfair'.

Favorite thing I've ever written? Oh man, that's tough. My favorite thing to write was Plenty of Paper, because it was effortless and easy and the first time I'd actually written a not-completely-cracked-out AU for any fandom at all. I don't really like to reread my stuff because I spend a lot of time going, "Oh god, I could have changed that," or "What the hell does that even mean," and that's never fun. I guess if forced to choose, I'd pick Bump In the Night, though. :>

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Both.
Current favorite song: I Will Follow You into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
An abbreviated fannish history: Started out at the tender age of 12 (my old ff.net account is still around somewhere) with Friends (my favorite show at the time). Then some Harry Potter and lots of Anime fandoms. Queer as Folk, House, Supernatural, then finally SGA which has consumed me like no fandom before.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? I try to avoid both as much as possible.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? Adorable/comfy maybe, hot not so much.
Most satisfying book to reread: I do like Hemingway and the Greek classics (shut up, philosophy's one of my double majors), but right now it's probably Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.
Shows you're currently watching: (It's quite possible I watch too much tv) SGA, Mythbusters, Deadliest Catch, Conan, the Colbert Report, Battlestar Galactica, Ace of Cakes, House...
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? Obviously yes. What kind of question is that?
Questions:
When/how did you first fall in love with John/Rodney?
Any funny/interesting stories to share?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I try to avoid both as much as possible.
A big ol' WORD to that, man.

A couple of my friends were slowly pulled in at the end of last year's TV season - around May and June - and they decided to gang up on me and pimp fic and eps at me until I capitulated. I read a few fics by astolat and cesperanza and resonant first, and then made my way through the fandom at large through rec lists and del.icio.us pages. It was Good Stuff, seriously. I've never been in a fandom that has such consistently awesome fic.

Ummm, I can't really think of anything off the top of my head, but have you checked out notcot.org? I've lost hours there.

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? MILK

Current favorite song: Shot into the Blue by Junior (as in it was the earworm in my head as I typed this)

An abbreviated fannish history: November 2004, got LJ, posted R/S stories in HP fandom; wrote mostly comedy, shied away from smut (ha!); did not learn POV for about six months; probably called someone "the other man" in a story (pet peeve!); was headhunted (no lie - she's ruthless when she's focused) by [livejournal.com profile] dogeared to drink the SGA kool aid; watched first episode, spring 2006 (had already read fic); first episode, btw, was The Tower. OUCH. And yet i stayed; summer 2006, wrote 'Farm in Iowa'; world exploded; the end.

Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? Less evil, if they're not overcooked. Overcooked carrots are the spawn of satan.

Bunny slippers - hot or not? not

Most satisfying book to reread: Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? DARK chocolate. Starbucks makes "dark mocha" flavour frappucinos now. It's what happens when ordinary mocha becomes corrupted by its superpowers and turns evil. Yes, am slave to the Starbucks capitalist consumer machine, yay.
Current favorite song: Professedly: "Tentative" by System Of A Down. Really: Britney Spears' new single *flees*
An abbreviated fannish history: Read an article about Potterslash when I was twelve. Was permanently warped. Became TERRIBLY OBSESSED with Doctor Who in summer 2006 and will probably never get over it. Still also like Torchwood. Dabbled in The Complete Works Of Master Whedon, also Supernatural and House and all the other "in" things before discovering fandom enlightenment in terms of Stargate Atlantis and the Boosh. Still
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? ALL VEGETABLES ARE EVIL THINGS. This is problematic, as I am quasi-vegetarian. I suppose potatoes and broccoli are all right. And tomatoes, as long as they have been cooked long enough to resemble ketchup rather than plant life. All sorts of pak choi and things are nice, too.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? These things have always worried me. But then, I cannot eat a Kinder Happy Hippo because of their poor little faces, so I'm just odd, I think.
Most satisfying book to reread: Professedly: respectable science fiction of some sort - Iain Banks, that kind of thing. Maybe "Anansi Boys" by Neil Gaiman, if I'm in sympathetic company. My real comfort reading is "Hexwood" by Diana Wynne Jones. I am still in love with the main character, after ten years :)
Shows you're currently watching: Doctor Who, since the new series is on TV, am working my way through SGA series 3 through the mighty power of bit-torrent... unicorns.
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? O most certainly. Though I won't pretend to know what the bit in brackets means.
Questions:
1. Which is better as a flimsy plot device, Aliens Made Them Do It, Sex Pollen, or Shag Or Die? (v. important question, you understand. It reveals deep psychological truths! Or something. I favour Aliens, cause... I like aliens. Er.)
2. Liking calculus: symptomatic of a warped mind?
3. Best and worst people to be stuck on a desert island with.
(I could carry on making up questions all day... had best stop now...)

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Mfeo = meant for each other, which they totally are. :D

1. Oh that is so unfair. I'm stuck between Aliens and Sex Pollen; I have a strange affection for sex pollen because it lends itself to a sort of liquid, hazy style or writing, but Aliens can be interpreted in so very many awesome ways. I can't choose! :O
2. Yes to that. Math is kind of my arch nemesis.
3. I'll answer that with one person: Rodney McKay. Because while he'd be the most likely to get you off to deserted island and capitulate to a few rounds of hot, hot sex if you asked him a few times, he'd also bitch endlessly about the sunscreen he lost during the plane crash, and how many people are being WRONG right then because he isn't there to correct them.

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Ew, chocolate.
Current favorite song: I was listening to "Jungle Boogie" a lot last night for no good reason.
An abbreviated fannish history: Lots and lots of lurking in about a gazillion fandoms, spotted with occasional moments where I poke my head up until fandom comes along and bashes me over the head with an enormous mallet, at which point I go back to lurking. Most likely to respond to this name: Um, in real life, I go by my real name or any number of nicknames (from marching band, my brother, etc). But on LJ I really only use my name or a shortened version of it if you like.
Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Milk! White (and also dark) taste strange to me, I have to be in the right mood for them.
Current favorite song: Uh. Well. At work I either listen to the Pirates soundtracks on repeat, or I listen to classical. I like both vocal and symphonic and I have a pretty big collection so it depends on my mood, which varies kind of widely, but the Pirates stuff has been constant for months now.
An abbreviated fannish history: Lurked in Harry Potter, read some random stuff in House, Good Omens, and CSI, wrote a little bit in Harry Potter and CSI, found SGA, found SG1, now write some in SGA and SG1 and (once, but within the past year) SPN.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? Less. I don't like my carrots cooked at all, unless it's like inside casserole or maybe soup.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? Hot.
Most satisfying book to reread: Oh god, um, I have an unholy love for much of Nora Roberts and will pull them out as comfort reads, or there's always Tamora Pierce (she writes YA fantasy). Any of those will work just fine.
Shows you're currently watching: Actually currently? What Not To Wear. Questions: Um... what is your most favorite story to tell? Or several, if you want, because I know I can't choose. Also, not to sound insulting or anything, but are you introverted in real life? Only that I've sort of noticed that a lot of people who spend tons of time online in fandom do seem to be, and I am not at all a social scientist but am kind of wondering if it's significant at all. Opinion on that?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really much of a story teller, in real life. I like to listen, mostly. And, yeah, I'm pretty introverted - like, to an extreme degree. At chopchica's urging, I took one of those online tests, and came out to be an INFP. This (http://keirsey.com/handler.aspx?s=keirsey&f=fourtemps&tab=3&c=healer) is the site that I've found is most accurate for me in particular.

I can't even pretend to know why people join internet fandom, because we house such a huge, varied population. I imagine it's that very thing that makes us so appealing to so many people, even if they do have a stimulating, fulfilling "real" life.

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
CHICKEN! I don't really approve of sea food anywhere near my mouth. It makes me a bit tummy-sick.

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? dark!
Current favorite song: ummm, I can't stop watching the 'Boomdeyada' commercial?
An abbreviated fannish history: started reading X-Files way back when, didn't really "get" slash until I had a summer fling with Smallville, and then it was allllll over; read LOTR, read HP, fell unexpectedly and madly in love with SGA in September 2005, had my first glimmerings of Nantucket things in summer 2006, mostly stick around and try to be good!
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? ew, cooked carrots
Bunny slippers - hot or not? Iiii think not. :D
Most satisfying book to reread: A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf
Shows you're currently watching: Doctor Who, The Office, Bones, House, Supernatural, anything Cate pimps me into (read: reality shows)

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? DARK DARK DARK
Current favorite song: Kathleen Edwards - Good Things
An abbreviated fannish history: Was baby-sitted by Star Trek as a wee thing, discovered fanfic through Ballykissangel, got distracted by other things, read Harry Potter, discovered more fanfic of the slash variety, drifted away again, Battlestar Galactica, icon-making begins, Doctor Who, discovery of rest of aspects of LJ/online fandom, much community joining, Lost, Daily Show/Strangers With Candy, Arrested Development/Futurama/The Office/Firefly, Oz, 30 Rock, Stargate Atlantis. \o/
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? You can never go wrong with peas!
Bunny slippers - hot or not? ...cozy. >_>
Most satisfying book to reread: Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Shows you're currently watching: Doctor Who, BSG, 30 Rock, The Office, America's Next Top Model. Everything else is on hiatus, but I am not suffering from separation anxiety, oh no. (Come baaaaccck SGA!)
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? YYYYY, a thousand times Y!
Questions: Three essential items in your purse? Colour of your bedspread? Favourite breakfast food? Dark chocolate = delicious? (Question marks: turning sentence fragments into interrogative statements since the 9th century!)

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, Pineapple? That's an adorable nickname, how'd you come about it?

1. I don't really carry a purse, but I always have my ipod, lip balm, and an extra hair tie.
2. It's brown! And very pretty! :D
3. So, so bad for my arteries, but a bagel with bacon and egg on it. YUM.
4. I'm not a fan of dark chocolate, really. I like my chocolate creamy and milklicious; I'm especially fond of Lindt and Cadbury - but only if it's from England. They license the recipe to Hershey in America and it just doesn't take the same. :\

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? If what you're asking is "favorite type of chocolate?" I am going to have to point out that white chocolate is not, in fact, chocolate. Either way, depends on the circumstances (mood, other things eaten with it, etc.).
Current favorite song: I don't have one!
An abbreviated fannish history: HP, SPN, Boosh
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? I do not think I've ever eaten peas and, as a rule, I avoid cooked carrots. So no opinion.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? It doesn't matter if they're hot, only if they're comfy!
Most satisfying book to reread: ...I don't know. (Recommend books?)
Shows you're currently watching: The Mighty Boosh (even though there are no new episodes! woe.), Bones, House, That Mitchell and Webb Look, Black Books, probably a few others
John Sheppard and Rodney McKay are (mfeo x epic)otp, y/n? It is my OTP? No (I mean, in SGA it is, yes, seeing as I've watched 9 episodes or something really close to that), but because I'm not really in SGA fandom (I just find you amusing), I will go with YN (pronounced yeh-no).
Questions:

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Neither! I do not care for chocolate, it tastes like sweet cardboard to me. Yes, even the good stuff. Yes, I still eat M&Ms (candy shell!) and chocolate chip cookies (cookies!) but as for just chocolate on its own - I'd rather have cinnamon imperials.
Current favorite song: Hm. I don't have one!
An abbreviated fannish history: Childness: wrote and acted out Mary Sue epic for Scarecrow & Mrs. King, where I was a kid spy and Lee Stetson's niece and also dating Philip King (the cute one). College - the internet was born and I discovered that what I was doing was called "fandom". It then goes Lois & Clark --> The X-Files --> Xena (concurrent with X-Files) --> Sorkinverse and Buffy (but not Whedonverse as a whole) --> popslash --> SGA --> due South, my new fannish obsession.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? Much much less evil. Peas are awesome.
Bunny slippers - hot or not? Hot.
Most satisfying book to reread: Watership Down - I've read it every year since I was in the 6th grade. So, for over half my life, I've been reading this book. It's wonderful.
Shows you're currently watching: Currently airing: Pushing Daisies; Supernatural; Doctor Who; Bones; Battlestar Galactica; Stargate Atlantis. On DVD: Babylon 5; The West Wing; due South

An abbreviated fannish history: Accidentally stumbled upon QAF US fic when I was looking for episode guides, um, four years ago, quickly found LJ and joined QAF US fandom. Stayed there for about a year, and moved on to SGA mostly due to my flist. SGA is still my primary fandom, but I dabble in Heroes, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Torchwood, BSG and a few other shows.

Milk chocolate or white chocolate? Dark chocolate.
Current favorite song: um, Panic! at the Disco's entire new album? Specifically Northern Downpour, if I had to pick.
An abbreviated fannish history: Star Trek (all series except Enterprise) -> XF -> LotR -> Sentinel -> due South -> Buffyverse -> Invisible Man -> Firefly -> Harry Potter -> SG1 -> SGA, where my soul was stolen from me by the shiny gay space awesome. I'm rabidly multifannish, so I still read many of these, as well as others (see "Shows I'm Watching). The "order" is mostly arbitrary, because 3/4 of that happened concurrently, or goes in cycles of obsession.
Are peas more or less evil than overcooked baby carrots? Far, far less
Bunny slippers - hot or not? NOT. I like my feet to be FREE when indoors. No socks, no slippers, nada.
Most satisfying book to reread: Lord of the Rings. Childhood favorites all the way, baby.

Current favorite song: it is now, has been since last year, and will be for the foreseeable future, Carry On Wayward Son.
An abbreviated fannish history: got into popslash in 2001, fell out about the time of the hiatus that wasn't actually a hiatus but was Justin breaking up with the rest of them, got into SG-1, fell out of that after Jack left, flirted briefly with Sentinel, Star Wars, and Magnificent 7 (though I never wrote in any of them) until last year when my friend forced me to watch Supernatural with him, and fell ass over tea kettle into fandom. I've always watched SGA since it's been on, but I've never really gotten involved in fandom until recently.

Questions: Mmm.... Are you a beach or a mountains person? Do you drive standard or automatic? What's your favorite chip flavor? What's your favorite outfit? Favorite beverage? What are five movies in your personal collection you'd say you've watched the most?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
PEAS ARE UNNATURAL. I'm glad you don't like them either.

1. I've never really been the mountains in a way that didn't involve the car I was in driving through them, so I can't honestly say. I do love the beach a lot, though. It's peaceful in the winter. :>
2. I don't drive. I go to school in Brooklyn, so it's just easier to take the subway, and I've always had a bit of an aversion to being behind the wheel anyway.
3. I used to lovvveee sour cream & onion, but mostly I just like salt. I'M EASY.
4. I have a paisley skirt that's all yellow and brown and red and PRETTY and I love it. ♥
5. GINGER ALE! It owns me right now, since I've just given up caffeinated sodas.
6. Newsies, Help!, Mary Poppins, But I'm a Cheerleader, aaannnd maybe Romeo + Juliet?

An abbreviated fannish history: Smallville -> Popslash -> The Sentinel -> due South -> SGA (and currently attempting to be dual-fannish for the first time with CWRPS/Spn without losing my love for SGA).

Questions:
What's one thing you're looking forward to this summer?
If you could follow one band (or musical artist) around for their super-duper world tour, who would you choose?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2008-05-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
SHORE LEAVE, baby. Two months-ish, if I'm not mistaken! :DDD I'm kind of terrified to be in DHew's presence, because I make enough of a fool of myself in front of normal people - with him I'll probably de-evolve and start ooking.

Oh man, that's rough. Dave Matthews Band? That's probably cheating, but come on, that would be fab.
