twenty eight bottles of bad grammar on the wall, twenty bottles of *hic* baaad grammaaaar
Oh my god. I know there's been a bit of a hoopla lately about gen vs. slash in our fandom, but I'm honestly curious as to how many people on my flist believe as this person does. Gen-ers: come out, come out!
- Do you believe wincest and/or slash should be relegated to a 'special' area on the web?
- If you don't read slash - or even if you don't read gen - are you still willing to act tolerantly towards those who do?
- Do you think that writing fanfic about something denotes what you truly wish to do in real life?
- At what point is too much too much regarding what you can get away with in fiction?

I read neither slash nor het because I just don't care for shipping/pairing/that kind of stuff. I read gen only. (However, I'm kown to lean towards slash rather than het) But seriously, half of my flist loves Wincest, and slash, and RPS and I don't have a problem with it. Whatever tickles your fancy. Even RPS is okay if it's clear that the people you're writing about are fictional as in "we know the people aren't actually getting it on even if we'd like them to" :-)

Going by my fanfic that would mean I'd love to be angsty and end up in hospital all the time :-p Nah.
At what point is too much too much regarding what you can get away with in fiction?
I think as soon as you portray rape as something positive, or molesting children...that's not ok. It's ok to write about it if the consequences are realistic but the "You rape me and for that I love you"-stuff is taking it too far for me...*is terribly uncool*

I completely agree. It's very hard to skirt that kind of line, in my opinion, where one side is appropriate and the other is tasteless. And also, there is also the ever-present scale: on one hand, the author is trying to evoke some kind of important emotional response from the reader with a possible rape scene, but on the other, the author might just be hitting the audience ridiculously over the head with gratuitous violence. Is better or worse if the rape scene is the main hinge point of the entire story?
I'll shut up now. Anyway! Thanks for being so awesome, honey.

2. Of course.
3. Hell no.
4. I think that's probably too broad and that everyone has their own level of what is too much.

Um. No. This fandom is very great at labeling. If you're unable to stomach something, don't click the freaking link. Duh.
If you don't read slash - or even if you don't read gen - are you still willing to act tolerantly towards those who do?
Like I said, I stay away from daddy!cest but I can still be best friends with the person who writes such fics because them writing that doesn't mean they want to do it with their dads.

See above. Also? I'm born and raised a Muslim. We're not big with premarital het sex let alone homosexuality and don't even get me started on incest. But the fact that I read and/or write these stuffs doesn't mean that I could see them being acted out in front of me and I would cheer them on. Or that I would like to act them out myself. They're called fictions for a purpose.

I love you. I find the timing of this ironic since I just went through this personally with someone I have known for years. Apparently by admitting I read brothercest (I do in a couple of other fandoms as well), I condone what was done to her 30 years ago by her grandfather. (way to still be the victim, apparently she'd forgotten I've been. . . anyway)
But yes, I agree.

Best wishes. :)

That's entirely possible. I don't do non-con either, and usually not even dubious.
And I'm certainly not trying to make light of what happened to her, but clearly the line between fan-fiction and reality has gotten smudgey for her. Maybe someday she'll see that she should know me better than that and we can try to talk, but right now I'm not sure she'd do anything except delete emails from me.

the great thing about this fandom-- and the reason i'm in it, even as a fringe-er-- is that, as a whole, we're all very accepting of each other. the fans write what they want, and it's actually a great breeding ground for developing ideas for fics. there are fics i definitely won't read, like mpreg, non-con, underage sex, john/dean (!!!), and they can easily be avoided by READING the labels to the fics. the great thing about the spnnewsletter is that the mods won't post a story without a label, and bless their hearts for that.
as for fantasies, i think they are healthy. i fantasize a whole lot, and if people knew about them, they would definitely throw me into a sanitarium! ;)

And I just wanted to shout GO YOU GO when you started listing all her grammatical errors :0P Fantastic, honey!!
To be honest, in my opinion fanfic is pure escapism and that's its point. It exists to be whatever you want to make it into, doesn't it?

And you're completely right. It's not like we're all taking our stuff and putting it up on television or publishing it all over the place. The internets are for porn!

Uh... no. That's what warnings are for. Don't wanna read Wincest? Don't click it. If you're extra-sensitive and get offended just by seeing the header, what the hell are you doing on the internet?
If you don't read slash - or even if you don't read gen - are you still willing to act tolerantly towards those who do?
I'm perfectly willing to act tolerantly towards those who read het and/or gen. :D I probably won't read any of their stuff, but as long as they act tolerantly towards me, I'll be happy to be friends with them.
Do you think that writing fanfic about something denotes what you truly wish to do in real life?
Uh... NO. It's a hobby.

Child molestation. But apart from that... well, that's what warnings are for. Don't want to read non-con death!fic Weecest? Don't click it. GOD, IT'S SO SIMPLE.

Well, hey, feel free to ignore me, but I have a prompt for you:
Basicallt the same as the one in the tiny 'two-midget' tent. EXCEPT. First time. Pent-up lust, that sort of thing. J2 or Sam & Dean, I really don't care. And it doesn't have to be a tent, just a small enclosed space of some sort.
It's probably far too presumptuous of me to request a fic, seeing as you don't know me at all, but if you feel like writing it...!
Oh, and:
1. No.
2. Yes. (Even though OMG I totally read slash.)
3. No.
4. Too much? Hah, you must be joking. However, I am mildly squicked by watersports. And that's really about it - I have no other squicks at all!

As far as fic goes, I want my fic to be well labeled so I can avoid topics I don't like, but really write whatever you want; I have a firm grip on reality versus fantasy.
Also correcting her grammar was priceless.

i really hope this doesn't turn into a big thing for the rest of fandom, though. i doubt it will, seeing as she's attacking EVERYTHING and most people will certainly want to band against that. but. well. sigh.

1. No. Nothing else is regulated. The web is free to share and people know that. Half the time you have to hunt these things down (porn, wincest other xxx material). People should be responsible for their own actions. I say it all the time, if you don't like then don't read, period.
2. I believe in fandom. Not "het" or "gen" or "slash" or "porn" or whatever else you want to label it as. If a good author writes a STORY or a STORY is rec'd to me, whether is be "gen" or "slash" I will read it and most likely enjoy it. If people want to write gen, fine. I just hate when the "gen" writers get all up in arms about slash. A lot of "slash" writers read and write gen themselves, but I understand that it doesn't go both ways. I forgot the question, umm. Well yes, I am very tolerant. [Read as "perverted"].
3. NO! Of course not. That's the whole point of writing FICTION. You create and explore other worlds and push your characters and make them do things that YOU wouldn't normally do, it's fantasy!! Maybe you are exploring kinks or putting them in danger, it doesn't matter. Maybe you are just curious about where a story could go or you are curious to other people's response. I know plenty of people who have to "research" for their fics because what they write about they have never done or wish to do. I just...FICTION. That's warning enough.
I just love how people are all, "Sam/Dean stories! INCEST IS WRONG!" Hello, guys, the show is a out GHOSTS and devils and black magic and pagan GODS!! Do you have a problem with that also? That old, "I'm a Christian excuse"...the Bible is about love and tolerance and understanding.
4. I don't think there is a point. NO LINES. Ahem. I came from a very violent fandom, where rape and torture and non con were the norm *cough cucumber cough* so I can read almost anything. Stories about harming babies or bestality squick me, so I stay away from them. The incest never bothered me in this fandom because it's a show on TV!! NEWSFLASH: They aren't really brothers!!
I have a massive daddy!kink, so I will read that when I know a lot of others wouldn't.
This fandom is more kink orientated than my last one. Other than the rape, the sex was pretty vanillia. I really enjoy that about SPN, all the bondage and stuff. Mmmm.
I guess you can't start drawing lines in fandom, what appeals to one person would squick another. We are so diverse and we should celebrate that. We all just need to respect one another and get along.
In conclusion:
I love dad's rapping their kids, yeah, that's completely normal and totally my point, thanks.

#3: No! Big no, because otherwise ewwww!
#4: Well regardless of what squicks me and what not, it should always be portrayed (I just typed porntrayed) *facepalm* tastefuly. :D
Now go and write some more porn!!!
