hi-ho hi-ho

Uh, I've been reading through some of my old stories lately, since apparently someone's been RECCING THEM JAWIGAWFIJIaw;lijAWJWijfAWijfawFIj OMGFLAIL. Ahem. I mean.

I've noticed that there's a bunch of feedback I never responded to - god knows why, I usually do - and I was wondering if it was important to you, as a reader and a member of my flist, for me to get back to all the comments? Even if they're months and months and even more months old? I think lyra_wing had a post about this a few weeks back, and I, uhm, lurked and read through the responses. A lot of people said it really mattered to them, even if the comment was ages old. So.

[Poll #949115]

ETA: HAHA, woops. I totally forgot to say that I, like, posted fic. Or something. Bring Out the Best, SPN Gen, written for [livejournal.com profile] kueble's snowed in challenge.

My answer is from the perspective of someone who doesn't mind not getting comments replied to. :) And also from the perspective of someone who has enough trouble responding to comments on recent fics, let alone old old old ones. *L*

I think it'd be nice if you DID have the time to go through old comments, so people knew they were being heard, you know? But i'm sure everyone understands that you're probably very busy and don't always have the time to reply to every single comment. I don't think i've commented much (if at all) on your stories because i suck at it. Seriously, my comments are all like "Woah, this was really good *flail*". But if i had commented,i personally wouldn't have been offended or anything if you hadn't replied to it.
And btw are you surprised that people are reccing your fics? Because they're amazing! *flail* <--- See? This is WHY i don't comment on stories, i sound insane!

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't sound insane at all!! Actually, that's how most people do their reviews, I think. I know mine - when I actually do review, I stink - usually go something like "AHH OMG! This was incredible OMG! *flaps*!" So, yeah. Hahah.

And, er, uh, *blush* thank you so much! I never really expect recs, they always make me flail around like a loser.

See, as a reader I love getting replies to comments I left on fic. As a writer I have no problem replying to comments, since I don't get a lot. But as ME, I don't want you to waste time on replying to stuff BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO WRITE ME MORE CROSS-SPECIES PORN! *coughs* Totally selfish. So I probably shouldn't vote in the poll.

I'd rather you spend the time writing new fic. :)

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwahaha, you sure about that? I mean, look what I crank out!

I figure that most authors only answer when a review speaks or touches them deeply or when someone takes the time to give an in depth review.

I mean, I'm not gonna be offended because my review of 'this story is awesome' isn't going to warrant special time from you.

*thinks* My answer sounds mean. Does it sound mean? I think it does. *chews hair*

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't sound mean at all! That's sort of how I feel when I review - which I rarely do, because I stink. I don't expect an author to get back to me, I only review because I'm bursting at the seams with it and I need to babble at them for a while.

I'm saying yes, because I personally think it's common courtesy to respond and I've actually gotten to the point where I'm less likely to make the effort feedbacking if I see that that person hasn't bothered to respond to people.

It is a controversial topic, though. :)

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I usually reply to comments on my fic as I get them for the first few weeks, but then after that, if I fall behind, it seems like it's kind of weird to reply. I have comments from, like, January that I never knew were there at all, and it's like I'll say a perfunctory 'thank you! i'm glad you liked it! :D' and whoever left the comment'll think I'm a DOUCHE.

[identity profile] nu-breed.livejournal.com 2007-03-19 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* That's fair enough.

I know a BNF who shall not be named in a previous fandom of mine who didn't respond to feedback for six or seven months. Which, yeah, I guess when it's gone that long, why bother?

Mind you, this was the person who saw her stories as a gift and the feedback as a thankyou to that gift, so why should she feel compelled to respond to feedback? Yeah, I know. ;)

*makes a face* That's a little....um. Uh huh. I can see why you're leery.
