Three posts in one day, woo! \o/
- My internet is sucking like Sam right now. Sorry, kids I was talking to on AIM, I do love you!! :(
- This icon makes me die a little. In my pants. Oh, Jenny, how you be so hotass?
- I'm watching the history of sex on The History Channel right now and it is awesome, awesome, awesome. I adore Ancient Rome to a ridiculous degree. I kind of wish there were more stable things to do with a Classics degree besides teach, because I would be all over that. Anyone else with me on this? Am I just a complete geek?
schneestern? I'm so sorry it's taking me forever to get back to you about the cheese. We will finish this thread, I promise! - So, yeah. What's your favorite ancient civilization? This is also a really geekish thing, but indulge me. Do you like Rome, Greece, Egypt, China, India, etc? What? And, well, of course explaining why would be nice, too. And, while we're at it, what's your take on Western vs. Eastern thought in regards to religion, women, social responsibility, and class? I'm curious.
- I am so grateful for every comment I get that sometimes I squeal just at the sight of my inbox. Seriously, you all are pretty damn fabulous. Just. *pokes internet* Curses.
- No, really. No one else has a thing for snakes? Really?

I really, really want to see The History of Sex, but I don't have time/energy to watch it at 10 PM on Saturday nights and I'd feel really awkward setting the DVR for it and then having my parents be like "Er... Monica?" It looks soooo intriguing. And fun to geek out over. AND it's sex!
My favorite ancient civilization... Honestly, I don't know that I know enough about all of them to have a favorite. I am quite interested in Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, cuneiform, all that. And ancient Egypt is fascinating because hello, pyramids! And ancient Greece. And the Celts. I don't think the Celts get enough love, even though they're slightly less ancient than the rest. Just slightly. :)
I'm not really with you on the Classics thing, but I *can* appreciate the sentiment. You're not necessarily a complete geek-- or if you are, you've got me for company, and several others, I suspect-- it's just that my real passions are English and brains (neuroscience). If I had room/time/energy for more, I would be all over Classics (right after evolutionary biology, genetics, and linguistics, and maybe anthropology and/or archaeology... haha).
(And hey, look how appropriate my icon is now!)

Also, CELTS! *proudly flaunts her Irish* I adore the Celts. They were so sassy! And, come on, when Rome went after them and then skittered back home with it's tail between its legs to write about flame-haired women with no fear? That right there is why I love.
Oh, and one more thing: if the history of sex ever comes on again in its entirety, you must watch it, whether or not your parents are breathing down your neck. It's fabulous and enthralling, most especially because you see cultural differences in regards to pleasure and obligation.
I lied, one more thing: my sn is aneros2065! :D

:P Gotta love them ancient greeks.
I've dabbled in Celtic and Norse (see icon) mythology, too. Lots of fun to be had in both of those. \o/ I just could never get into Egyptian. It just never had the literary appeal the others did. meh. Not that ancient Egypt didn't totally kick ass. Cuz it did. Um HELLO PYRAMIDS! I just love talking about htis crap. :D
I'd love to comment on the Eastern vs Western thought bit... but I really do not feel informed enough (AT THIS TIME... you haven't heard the last of me) to have a fair discussion of it. But yeah. Raincheck, baby.
I wuv you! *mwah*

i also wish there was an awesome job to have with a classics degree, or our australian equivalent. but history is history and there's not much you can do with it because it's just knowledge. wonderful, wonderful knowledge. but no-one pays for that these days. i blame society.
and my favourite is egypt. i havent studied any of the others in such great detail, but i love egypt and all of the ancient near east because of their sophisticated politics, and completely different ways of thinking about things (learning social and cultural history is learning a different way to think things, i think, which is pretty damn coolpaper) came out of the near east, and i love their mythologies, religious or otherwise (modern and ancient). i love the primitive yet ingenious technologies, i love the way the government was structured, i love the literature, the names, the syntax of sentences and stories and the hieroglyphs and the hieratics, i love the art, and i love the huge body of evidence we have that tells us not only about the state and the king, but about the common people.
and this is so long but it totally just reminded me of how much i love learning about ancient egypt, and now im sad i'm at a university where i can't study it. i want to go back to senior year :(
