too busy singin' to put anybody down

Dear Little Girl,

Where are your parents. You are about as big as a very aerodynamic toothbrush, wearing an entirely too skimpy Princess Jasmine costume in forty degree weather, and walking around by yourself after dark. That is like the beginning of a horrifying episode of CSI, and, oh dear god don't talk to the sleazy group of older boys on the corner. They have masks, baby Jasmine, and hockey sticks.

Yours in heart-stopping terror,
Mel

God, Halloween is so nerve wracking. A group of high school boys followed me home from the library this afternoon, and they were all wearing horrible, blank masks and big black hoodies and they didn't talk the entire time! I have never been more grateful for the fact that my messenger bag is damn heavy. I swear I was about three seconds from whipping out my red pen and trying to scare them off with grammar.

Anyway, I was trying to nap earlier, and as is my wont, I was eating crackers and drinking apple cider and listening to my last.fm to prepare (naps take so much effort, seriously) and, lo, it was soothing. Then The Monkees came on and I pretty much felt five years old all over again. So I want to know, mighty flist: what takes you back. A song you listened to, a certain food you ate all the time, a specific movie or actor you had a crush on - maybe even a distinct scent that reminds you of your mom lighting candles during dinner. What makes you feel five years old?

Los Isla Bonita by Madonna. I had her 'True Blue' cassette and my best friend in Kindergarten (J'leia) and I would dance around and sing to it. OR! Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi. I have literally been in love with that man for over twenty years. GAH. lol

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
HELL YES to the Madonna! I have to admit, though, that any small bit of Bon Jovi love still left in my soul was ruthlessly squashed when my mother listened to nothing but Slippery When Wet for a full year. :(((

Anything by the Monkees. Anything at all. Sitting in the Transformers movie this summer when Cullen(?)'s voice came on was like going through a time-traveling machine, because suddenly I was a kid again and bouncing my way through Transformers (yes, bumblebee was my favorite some things are consistent) and GI Joe and Voltron and really, that is totally my childhood.

So is watching early Disney -- the Black Cauldron, Sleeping Beauty -- and listening to the Beatles.

Mah daddy wanted me exposed to good bands when I was in the shell, as it were. I think was six or seven before I heard popular music not from ten or more years before I was born, and that was Michael Jackson, the album with Thriller. One of the really weird things about watching Supernatural is that these are all the songs I know, love, and grew up on, and most of them are older than I am. When I talked to my 22 year old cousin about the show she was all "that old foggey music?" and I think my jaw reached China.

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! My dad's always a bit shocked if I'm listening to music that old - "Where did you find that! Is there an older man in your life!" - but, yeah, calling it old foggey music? What the hell. It's just good.

[identity profile] gaffsie.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the worst taste in music when I was a kid. Please don't judge me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszgcrvgyK0). I remember that I bought their CD on a whim (in the tax-free shop on a ferry!) and that I genuinly loved it. God. WHY DID YOU MAKE ME REMEMBER?

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*stifles laughter* OH HONEY. I. Oh dear. TOTALLY NOT JUDGING YOU. *pat*

AND THAT'S THEIR LEAST EMBARRASSING SONG

My favourite was called "I'm a pro at loving," and I knew the lyrics by heart (don't worry, the scars faded with time):

"BUT THERE ARE THINGS I DO THAT NO OTHER MAN
WOULD HAVE THE STAMINA TO DO
TWISTS AND TURNS NO ONE ELSE KNOWS
COME HOME TO ME AND YOU'LL SEE"
*

IT'S *~ART~*

*Translated for your pain enjoyment.

Kissing Tag.

No *seriously*! I broke my leg playing kissing tag at daycare. It was awesome :D

[identity profile] raiining.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
... and I really hate not being able to edit responses on lj. 'Cause the button is so shiny and I always hit it TOO EARLY! >.<

... but yeah, as for music Sharon Lois and Bram (bragm?) were all I knew back then. But "one a'clock two a'clock three o'clock rock" was a favoute. No idea who did that.

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
eeee, from happy days! i know the song you mean, and i LOVED it when i was little too. <333

[identity profile] unamaga.livejournal.com 2007-11-01 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
kissing tag! woah, i've never actually heard of that. do you just run after boys trying to kiss them?

[identity profile] raiining.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposite: one person is It, but instead of tagging you the It person has to kiss you. So I was running away from the kissing person. /sigh He was my first my-god-we're-six-and-your-cute-wanna-be-friends boyfriend person. /lols
