After having so little to say for such a long time, it's a little weird to be posting things daily again. *explodes into action all over lj!* Anyway.

This fanmix is Exhibit B in the case for John and Rodney running away together to live in a cozy bungalow with a big backyard less than a quarter mile away from the beach where they will collect stray cats in between bouts of incredible sex and - just generally be happy forever and ever, the end. Exhibits C and D to follow. This is what you people get for not discouraging my schmoop addiction.

Because [livejournal.com profile] exsequar tagged me and I can deny her nothing:

List 10 songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 10 songs. Then tag 10 other people to see what they're listening to.

In which I ramble about musics! )

Aaaannnd, a batch of icons! Thirty six in total: seventeen August Rush, six DHew/Rodney, two JFlan/John, five Teyla, two Ronon, four CKR/RayK. I feel like somehow I should turn this into a Christmas Song. And a RayK in a pear tree?

My headset was summarily destroyed the other day by a rampaging beast (aka me during a frantic search for my camera card) which is hugely upsetting since I was planning on recording a hello message for you all and I can't for the life of me figure out how to work the voice post whosamajigs. Alas, you've been spared my hilariously idiotic ramblings about David Hewlett and dresses and cookies - not that the three are related in any way - for another week. Rest easy while you can because soon your time will come and, lo, it will be epic. Seriously, just ask [livejournal.com profile] schneestern. The first time we talked on Skype together I ended up pontificating on the significance of ladybug stickers for ten minutes. I don't even know how. Something about the number of spots being a metaphor for Love Sweet Love? Yeah.

Top three songs making Mel happy at the moment:
1. [Patrick Wolf - Careless Talk] Like me reccing a Patrick Wolf song is a huge surprise. But, okay, this is so adorable and jazzy and so unlike his normal songs, and I maybe really want him to be my boyfriend. Don't judge me.
2. [Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! - Insert Disco Beat Here] Courtesy the lovely [livejournal.com profile] chickyoops. Definitely not for everyone, but it's funky and hilarious and weird and I can barely understand a word the singer's saying, which means that of course it's right up my alley. Also, hello, their name.
3. [Beirut - Postcards From Italy] The perfect summer song, all sweetness and nostalgia and light, like the memory of sun warming your toes on a balmy afternoon.

Now you! What's making you happy today, flist? *group smoosh*

(PS, Don't let any of the actual content fool you, this is totally a gratuitous icon post. Nghjfaoigm JFlans, how are you so sexass. Please to be never stopping. Do it for us, the fans.)
unamaga: (bedroom eyes)
  1. When you see this, post a quote from Doctor Who on your LJ.
Sir Robert: I'm sorry, Mum. It's all my fault. I should've sent you away. I tried to suggest something was wrong. I thought you might notice. Did you think there was nothing strange about my household staff?
The Doctor: Well, they were bald, athletic... your wife's away. I just thought you were happy.
First time I saw Tooth and Claw, I choked on my soda and nearly sprayed the keyboard. True story.

  2. Why being friends with me is totally a mistake, Vol XIV, Part Twelve. )

  • [livejournal.com profile] chickyoops just sent me this song - The Wave Pictures - Kiss Me - and, you guys, it alludes to my favorite Emily Dickenson poem ever and The Beatles almost simultaneously. Plus, it's totally funky. I don't even know what to do with myself. This is unprecedented.

  • The housing saga continues. Apparently my sister and her boyfriend are thinking of moving to Daytona together so he can teach at a flight school, which is just. Argh. And where does that leave me? I have no idea, but I suspect a box on the corner, stealing wireless from the library and skipping meals to pay for SGA box sets. Upside, I have successfully cleaned my room from top to bottom, and it almost looks presentable! I'm not excited to have a bunch of strangers running around in there while I'm not allowed in my own home for four hours, but what can you do. I've hidden all the racy stuff in a lock box, and that's really as good as it's gonna get, I guess.

  • Does anyone know anything about this place? As in: is it legit, does it have a good reputation, will I be completely fucked in the ear if I give them money, etc.? Some of the classes sound really interesting, and if they're good, it would be an awesome thing to do when I have some spare time.

  • A list of things wot have brought me cheer the past couple of days, in case any of you who need cheer also have missed them: forced team hugs!; adorable smooching visual!; languid grass kisses!; pig tail pulling!; aliens indirectly make them do it! And, okay, just the whole of [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch. It's like one giant Get Well Soon card - with porn! <3

Things wot I have learned today:

  1. I am still so emotionally invested in Sam and Dean, even though I like to pretend I'm not. I haven't been able to change the songs on my iPod since I got my new computer, since it's the only copy I have of all the old stuff that was on Elphaba before she kicked it, and so I still have tons of the music I listened to religiously that meant Sam&Dean to me. While writing in the Library today, I had it on shuffle and Brothers On a Hotel Bed came on, and I started sniffling. I really hope the finale tears my heart out in a good way - the kind of way that IMToD did - and not in an "oh, Eric Kripke, how do you get funding" way. I'm insanely worried.

  2. [livejournal.com profile] schneestern thinks I should make out with [livejournal.com profile] kashmir1 at Shore Leave.

  3. Rereading an author's entire body of work is very satisfying. The past three days have seen me going through [livejournal.com profile] thegrrrl2002's website, and can I just say that if you're new around here and haven't stumbled upon it yet, her and [livejournal.com profile] yin_again wrote wristband porn. I always forget, and then it hits me over the head like a very, very attractive plank of wood.

  4. Hot, humid weather makes me want to listen to the Juno Soundtrack. It's so...sunshine-y. If that's a word. Which it isn't, but whatever. Here it is for you, in case you haven't yet experienced its awesome.

    Mediafire link / Sendspace link

  5. August Rush is an incredibly awesome movie; you should all see it if you can. Robin Williams was fabulous, mostly because I would never, ever expect that kind of role from him, and Kerri Russel keeps amazing me lately with how absolutely beautiful she's become. Not that she wasn't pretty before, but when you see her on the screen with her cello in August Rush, it's just - wow. Stunning. The entire main cast stunned me, actually. Freddie Highmore is so young to be playing such a big part, but he pulled it off and left me madly in love with August.

Metric - Calculation Theme, a song that I'm really enjoying today. :>

Yesterday morning, while waiting for the train on the platform with about twenty people clustered around me in a big knot, I was struck by an idea for fic. The only thing I had with me was my Stargate Atlantis tie in novel. I ended up writing smut on the inside covers, leaning on my own thigh while standing up, as a few interested parties tried to peer over my shoulder discretely. Oh, zany life.

Last night, Julie and I watched Indiana Jones. I am a heathen and had never seen it before (let's not even talk about my lack of Star Wars, because I think someone will actually stone me). It was fantastic fun, though, and I now understand the Harrison Ford thing, even though I'd always gone, "Ummm," when people talked about him before. And, well, because Julie and I are...Julie and I, the conversation inevitably turned to John Sheppard. My one track mind, let me show it to you. )

So I guess my real point here is: why hasn't fandom provided me with a John that carries a whip and wears a fedora?
unamaga: (specialist dex to the rescue)
Apparently I have music on the brain, because I've decided that I'm doing a Ronon mix next. I suspect this is my subconscious' method of avoiding big bang at all costs. Anyway, this one is only six tracks because, while compiling all the songs, I had some amazingly pretentious thoughts about setting a 'mood'. Ahaha, ahaha, yeah. Okay, moving on! Very pretty brush by [livejournal.com profile] blimey_icons; comment if you want any individual songs or if the link expires, etc.

There's about a foot of snow accumulating outside my window and absolutely no good reason for me to do anything but huddle under my blankets with a book and some music. Also: chocolate chip cookies. \o/

Beth Orton - Worms
Presidents of the United States of America - Peaches
Corrine Bailey Rae - Choux Pastry Heart
Earlimart - Happy Alone
Rosie Thomas - Finish Line
The Coral - In the Morning
Sara Bareilles - Fairytale
The Puppini Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Jonathan Coulton - De-evolving
Kermit the Frog - The Rainbow Connection

So, what have you been up to today? ♥
unamaga: (show your world to me)
Dear Flist,

Do you ever feel like the internet is reading your mind? It's one thing to have iTunes queuing up the exact songs you want to listen to, but talking about Cary Grant in an IM window and then finding North by Northwest suddenly on your flist? Suspicious. Speaking of Cary Grant, here is his body with John Sheppard's head on it. Yay!

I'm determined that Helluary this year will not actually be Hell. Last year was a fluke! A really horrible, rotten, no good, sob-inducing fluke! So, as a kind of talisman against further fluke-age, I am going to pack as much awesome into this post as I possibly can. Are you ready? Okay!

And just because I can...
My Valentinr - unamaga
unamaga: (spring is here!)
The New Pornographers - Your Daddy Don't Know
Neko Case sings the crap out of this one, guys. Seriously. Plus, it's catchy as all hell.

Phoenix - North
Schneestern gave this one to me, and it's so soothing. All instrumental, kind of...hypnotic without being trance or sounding manufactured.

Sufjan Stevens - The Dress Looks Nice On You
Typical Sufjan being awesome. Surprise!

Seasick Steve - Cut My Wings
Okay, this guy was on the Hootenanny and he wore overalls without a shirt and played his own percussion by thumping his foot on a box. It was so fucking awesome. He jammed like you wouldn't believe. If you can find it on youtube, link me, I want to watch it over and over again.

Feist - Honey, Honey
This is the sort of song you expect to find playing in the background of a really atmospheric make-out scene.

Mazzy Star - Wild Horses
This was on Buffy! Grounds for downloading, right there.

Jenny Owen Youngs - Fuck Was I
Considering what Jenny looks like (a sixteen year old Catholic school girl, if you were wondering), this song is really mature and wry and clever. Kind of reminds me of a polished mix of Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple.

Patrick Wolf - The Railway House
This song, inexplicably, makes me think of John and Rodney as train hopping ragamuffins. No, really, it's a great song, though.

Mildred Bailey - Everything Depends on You
AHA! Ahaha ha! A while back, I sent Sofie on a mad google search for the song in the "Missed The Saturday Dance" trailer, but we couldn't get hold of a proper sound bite because it was so rare. Then I went out and bought her CD. It's everything I dreamed it would be.

The Boy Least Likely To - Be Gentle With Me
So charming! I'm charmed. Also this was given to me with the comment, "Reminds me of Rodney!" so. You know. <333
unamaga: (zomgdhew)
Everyone is sad lately! What is going on, world? I mean, I know Saturn's retrograde, but unless you're like me and you have Saturn in Virgo in your birth chart, it shouldn't be such a big deal! Let us focus on the good before my internet decides to poop out again and leave me flailing like a headless chicken for hours upon hours.

  1. There is an adorable, shivering tiger cub on my television screen. It has little baby sisters and brothers and it is squeaking - SQUEAKING! - as it sucks on its bottle. A visual:

  2. This seal pup is very happy to see you! You should be happy too or else he will frown. :(

  3. Musics! I'm sure I've probably put some of these up before, but whatever, you should get a second chance to download them in case you were insane and didn't the first time around.
Eisley - A Sight to Behold
    Patrick Wolf - Augustine
Supreme Beings of Leisure - Last Girl on Earth
    Feist - Mushaboom
The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
Pink Martini - Hang On Little Tomato
Fiona Apple - Better Version of Me
Andrew Bird - Dear Old Greenland
Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet
    Regina Spektor - Genius

So. You know. Feel better and all, guys. And please inform me if the postal system has eaten my holiday cards again this year. *group hug*
unamaga: (so manly and robust)
You guys, I. I can't even handle SGA anymore. It's too hurty and beautiful and clever to deal with. *hands on cheeks* TEAM LOVE. I...need to retire to my fainting couch. Before I go, though, some musics:

Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love
Regina Spektor - December
Jim Noir - My Patch
April March - Chick Habit
unamaga: (#1)
My Julie is not feeling well and, since all the little minions are snugly tucked up in their beds dreaming minionly dreams, I have made her a tiny spam to help her feel better. Some musics first, and then some pictures stolen from pretty much everywhere.

PJ Harvey - Hair
Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath
Eisley - Lost at Sea
Pink Martini - Tea for Two
KT Tunstall - Hold On

Dear Little Girl,

Where are your parents. You are about as big as a very aerodynamic toothbrush, wearing an entirely too skimpy Princess Jasmine costume in forty degree weather, and walking around by yourself after dark. That is like the beginning of a horrifying episode of CSI, and, oh dear god don't talk to the sleazy group of older boys on the corner. They have masks, baby Jasmine, and hockey sticks.

Yours in heart-stopping terror,
Mel

God, Halloween is so nerve wracking. A group of high school boys followed me home from the library this afternoon, and they were all wearing horrible, blank masks and big black hoodies and they didn't talk the entire time! I have never been more grateful for the fact that my messenger bag is damn heavy. I swear I was about three seconds from whipping out my red pen and trying to scare them off with grammar.

Anyway, I was trying to nap earlier, and as is my wont, I was eating crackers and drinking apple cider and listening to my last.fm to prepare (naps take so much effort, seriously) and, lo, it was soothing. Then The Monkees came on and I pretty much felt five years old all over again. So I want to know, mighty flist: what takes you back. A song you listened to, a certain food you ate all the time, a specific movie or actor you had a crush on - maybe even a distinct scent that reminds you of your mom lighting candles during dinner. What makes you feel five years old?

This little fanmix is to go with the Buffy AU I'm hoping to have ready for Halloween that's apparently been sitting half-finished on the downstairs computer since August. Guess who's the slayer. Go on, guess. I'll give you a hint: he has the lung capacity of a marine mammal, big baby blues, and a name that rhymes with schmodney.

“This is totally not what I signed up for!” Rodney yelps, groping around on the grass to find his stake. His heart feels like it’s about to beat its way right up his esophagus and choke him to death, and his watcher doesn't even care. “Why are you just sitting there, I am about to die, don’t you have a soul at all, you complete maniac! Help! Help would be ni – aaahhgg!”

The newly risen vampire (vampires are real, what the hell) lunges at Rodney’s neck, and, oh god, he is never ever going to let a boy give him a hickey ever again. At the last second, he gets his stake in his fingers and thrusts it at the vampire’s chest, hoping that he’s aiming at the heart.

With a startled bwoosh, the vampire explodes into dust.

“Ew,” Rodney whimpers, flopping back onto the wet ground. “Oh my god, I can never wear this shirt again.”
Welcome To The Hellmouth )
unamaga: (can kill you with my CUTE)
Ahh, it is early yet, but I do believe the wintertime ennui is upon us. Break out your light boxes and potassium-rich food products, guys! I love the snow and the cold way more than the stifling, sticky heat of summer, but the whole sun going down early, rising early thing? Yeah, no. Not really my favorite part of the season.

Speaking of, is it too early to ask you all for Christmas lists? It totally is, isn't it. I'm sorry, I never wanted to be the CVS of your flist, decking the halls cheerfully in the middle of August. No, seriously, have you been to CVS lately? Because the ones near me have out their dancing Santas already. My head hurts when I see them.

Oh, that reminds me. Have any of you been over to www.pasta.com? Because, oh my dear god, worst rendition of the Macarena ever. I think I nearly ruptured a lung trying to decide if I should burst into hysterical laughter or cry for my scarred soul.

Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena, que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegria y cosa buena, dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena, eeeeeeh Macarena!

That's right. You better believe I'm doing the dance, too.

Is it wrong that I'm sitting here listening to this song and imagining a fangirl jamboree version with the word COCK inserted? Yeah. Yeah, it is. Wow, I've been spending too much time writing porn. Here's some music!

The Tea Party - Psychopomp (Live)
Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain
Andrew Bird - Imitosis*
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child
The Champs - Tequila
*currently obsessed with! highly recommend!
Since the librarian AU was finished early (!!!), I started working on my [livejournal.com profile] just_google_it prompt. Ahahah, high school AUs are never not awesome. I don't even care if it turns out well, because I wrote about 2,000 words last night in a mad daze of delight and it was so fun, oh my god. I'd almost forgotten how exciting it is to just go and not worry about the wordcount or conventional English standards. Wheee! Dig it, man!

John Sheppard - teen track star! )
unamaga: (such a beautiful day)
Yesterday was kind of a wash: I didn't get to see Barack. Apparently something like 25,000 people showed up - which wasn't exactly surprising so much as very, very loud, to the point where Lee and I couldn't hear him speaking at all. Even the rap music (YES, there was RAP MUSIC because Barack is totally down with that, yo) was muffled and sort of incomprehensible. There was an upside in the fact that I got to laugh at a bunch of kids from NYU who were trying to mosh at a political rally. This is absoLUTELY the time and place for a mosh pit, guys! Way to go! Yeah.

Anyway, Lee and I ambled down to The Strand (when we realized it would be more fulfilling to watch the speech on youtube) and bookgasmed happily over the specials in fiction, and then we got some gelato in Little Italy; so, all in all, not a complete waste of subway fare. Oh, well. He'll be around again, and maybe this time I'll try to get there fifteen thousand hours early so I can be closer to the platform.

But tonight promises to be better! Stargate Atlantis! I've seen the leaked version already, and I'll miss the Bang Man, but I think it's going to be a whole different experience to see it with everything put together right. I'm excited! *does a little dance* Who else is gonna be watching it? Anyone on the east coast want to babble through it with me on AIM or something?

Weekly moosic blob:
[Snippet of Conversion Commentary] Not really music per say, but oh my god Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett are precious! Slapfight!
[Pink Martini - Bolero] Obviously not theirs, but they make it jazzy and smooth. <3
[The Clash - London Calling] If you don't know this song already I may have to cry.
[The Tragically Hip - Poets] I don't know if I've put this one up before, but whatever. So. FUN.
