I've been tagged! :O  Apparently this means that I have to post one or more happy-making things each day for the next eight. Well - easy enough for today!

Day One: Rediscovering Old Loves

I've spent the morning lounging in bed and reading some of my old favorite Remus/Sirius fics. (This is, as usual, [livejournal.com profile] kashmir1's fault.) Probably I should be doing any of the other innumerable things on my list, but it took my father an hour to dig out the car this morning and I'm far too cozy and bundled up to manage anything more strenuous than reaching for my milk or nibbling on one of [livejournal.com profile] morgaine22's unreasonably delicious chocolate chip cookies. So, here are a few fics I'm reading through right now. Any recs are mightily welcome!

Turnabout, by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge
Sirius likes playing games, and Remus doesn't like it when he plays them during work hours. But Remus has a trick or two of his own up his sleeve.

Boiling Point, by [livejournal.com profile] anniesj
Six hours locked in a room with someone you love. It's the worst kind of hell imaginable.

Seven Things That Didn't Happen On Valentine's Day At Hogwarts, Or Maybe They Did, by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock
"This is the weirdest Valentine's Day yet," Peter mused. / "But not 'ever,'" Remus said dryly.

The Great Mud-Dunking Tussle of 1978 (and other tales), by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon
January 1978, and Sirius is visited by An Idea with big plans for the day.  This is the story of the chaos that ensued.

Kitty says:
Happy Birthday, Kim!

In order to properly celebrate the anniversary of Kim's spectacular birth, I have compiled a meager offering of pretty people being pretty with each other. Some are pretty women, some are pretty men, and I think there is also a storm trooper in there somewhere. Needless to say, this is probably not worksafe! )

Also, Kim's already seen this because I spammed her with it in IM, but it's a short, cracky HP/SPN crossover and I felt the need to share. AKA I have two hundred more pages to read before morning and I don't want to.

It Has Bells On [PG-13] ~715 words
Supernatural/Harry Potter crossover crack
Slight spoiler warning for Deathly Hallows!

'That's Hermione,' the teenager in their arms interjected helpfully. 'She's bossy. And short.' )

Some random pimping!

  • Set Your Hope on Fire - a Harry Potter fanmix by [livejournal.com profile] fallslikeicarus. AD/GG pairing, with major, major spoilers for Deathly Hallows. I haven't really listened to it all yet, but the fact that it exists makes me happy in my belly.

  • A Mix Tape on exopolis, which is HYSTERICAL. Every single mix tape you made during the eighties or nineties with your little ridiculous tape recorder? This is it, but even better. And I quote: "Your eyes? Are like...two marbles? Made of diamonds from...Eurasia?" and, "When I think about you, I think about, um, frosted flakes and...trolls. Like, the really cute trolls...the naked ones? With the, the hair? Anyway."

  • The Four Quarters 'Verse by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone Stargate Atlantis, McShep AU (read in order)

Four Quarters | The Sea Swells | The Bellerophon Brothers | Bootleg: The Best of The Puddlejumpers | Tokyo Drift | Five Magazine Covers | La Familia

One of the most utterly consuming AUs I have ever read. I admit to maybe getting a little teary-eyed at the end (shhh, Sofie), but seriously. Seriously. This whole thing is incredible, so well put together and emotionally demanding and sometimes messed up but always beautiful. I can't recommend it highly enough, really. Happy sigh.

  • Just in case any of you haven't gloried in it properly, Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently" vid. It is so wonderful to randomly burst out with lines from it every once in a while: "That's fuckin' teamwork!" Oh, yeah. <3
unamaga: (never leave a man behind)
Any of you who are also friends with [livejournal.com profile] immoralilly know that she's just left today on a plane back to England. I'm kinda huddling in my room for right now, wearing three shirts, drinking iced tea by the gallon, and trying not to be a sad lump because I can't get to sleep. SO! Things that are making/have made today suck a little less:

  • [livejournal.com profile] talilov sent me a ridiculously fabulous package with a huge bar of Dove chocolate in it (which I ascertained did not contain actual doves when I happily consumed the entire thing), a pimped out toy car (FLAMES! On the hood!), and a green balloon (I have managed to injure myself with it twice already, please do not ask how, it is very embarrassing and I will not tell you).

  • Veer.com sent me a pamphlet which included a slip of paper: "THE WORLD'S FIRST-EVER BIGGEST, SCARIEST, MOST GLOW-IN-THE-DARK* COLORING CONTEST EVER!" with a small footnote at the bottom: "Contest does not glow in the dark." Hahahah, veer. You kidder.

  • Re-reading Cartographer's Craft by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge. I remember reading this while it was a WIP, refreshing my flist every night just in case he put a chapter up, and it's as enthralling now as it was then - especially after reading the seventh Harry Potter book. All of the things he got right, all of the incredible conclusions, the intricate mythology he wove when he wrote this? Wow. Even the Remus/Tonks mini-plot (something which can usually shake me right out of a fic) fits so well in this story that I can easily jump right over it without bitterness. I really enjoyed most of the seventh book; except for the slightly trite epilogue, it was tightly written, and any plot holes or lulls were easily glossed over by the sheer power of a lot of the story. However, even with that in mind, this fic has so much in it I would have loved JK to take instead.

  • I had a full night out with my mother and we never once sniped at each other! I think she sort of got that I was sad, and she kept turning the conversation to things she knows get me involved in the conversation. We actually talked politics over our mashed potatoes. The world no longer makes sense.
What's making you happy and shiny today? *opens arms for a hug*
unamaga: (i don't get people who don't like to fly)
Dear Universe,

You're so funny. If I could give you some milk chocolate lindt truffles I would, because seriously: awesome.

So much love,
Mel

Dear John Sheppard's Hair,

GOD, just. Just stop it. It's not right, it's not fair, and you really shouldn't be naturally that beautiful.

Reluctant Lust,
Mel

We're broadcasting today from the local Panera, where I have just eaten far too much of my panini and apple and am now feeling slightly nnnffff. However, there is some pretty fabulous clarinet and trumpet jazz going on in the background and the old man seated across the aisle from us is infinitely entertaining to me for no apparent reason. Maybe it's his bafflement at our laptops? Aww, old people.

Anyway, Robin and I have SPN fic in the works, which should be coming out in...uh, soonish, and also I have an SGA fic started in which Rodney McKay is a hamster. Why did anyone want me in a new fandom? I've done enough damage to the first. I should be banned. AND JULES TOO. John/Stargate? <3333 Oh baby, I adore.

Have you ever been unsatisfied by exhaustion? Like you're physically ready to drop, and your mind is like WAIT, she might update at ANY MINUTE - CONSTANT VIGILANCE! Maybe that's just a me thing. I'll explain.

I've spent the entire day re-reading everything [livejournal.com profile] mistful has ever written, which means HARRY POTTER. I haven't read Harry Potter fic in...well, since I found SPN, pretty much. And I still don't really have an urge to go looking for more recent fic, but oh, Underwater Light. Oh! Baby Mel's first HP slash! I need a tissue, or maybe some smelling salts. I feel faint. And you know how sometimes you go back and read some things you used to find incredible or amazing and they sort of leave you going, "Oh my. How was I so misguided in my youth? Did I find this story attractive? Was I really so blind?" NOT SO with this one. I was enthralled all over again, even though I've probably read the entire fic fifty bazillion times through already.

Then, after I'd finished that 22 chapter ORGY OF WORDS, I trampled on to read all her one-shots, and then dropped in again on Drop Dead Gorgeous. Which. Ok, if you have ever had any interest in H/D in your life, you need to read this. The whole 'Harry's a Veela' thing has been done, I know it has, but never by Maya, and never with such delightful results.

“Even You-Know-Who himself, we suspect, no sooner set eyes on Lily than he knew he must have her as his own. That was why he offered her the chance to step aside, that night in Godric’s Hollow. His desire to carry your mother off to a sweet sugar palace of carnality was, it seems, his downfall.”

Slughorn nodded almost sadly to himself, as if Voldemort was more to be pitied than blamed.

“Sweet sugar - Urgh,” Harry said. “Urgh.”

“We have investigated this thoroughly, Harry,” Slughorn assured him. “I went to visit your relatives, who I understand you have not seen in six years-”

“Dudley is not part Veela,” Harry said flatly. That could not be, or surely the world would crumble.

“A most personable young man,” Slughorn said. “What a physique! But of course, the Veela blood was even more evident in your Aunt Petunia. She has the blond hair and swanlike neck of the Veela, I never saw a Muggle with such a strong strain of Veela blood in them. Your Uncle Vernon is a lucky man. The Veela, of course, can sometimes be a little rough in the marital bed, but with their wild ministrations comes unimaginable ecstasy-”

Malfoy howled laughing. “Stop it,” he said, and Harry heard him pounding the floor with his fists. “I can’t take it. It’s too funny. I may soil myself.”

You can't see my face right now, but know that it is a face of GLEEFUL GLEE. Not only are the characters gorgeously done and highly developed - as per normal Maya fic - but the entire thing is layered and full of hysterical, painful, lovely depth. I've never read fic by any other author that can go so quickly from pee-your-pants funny to heart rending, human realization. I just...I think the biggest compliment I can really give Maya's fic in general is this: when you're reading it, you don't even remember grammar or mechanics or even the fact that you have socks on. You come upon the 'Reply to this post' link and it's like slamming back into your own body.

And I realize I'm gushing and that this post is entirely too long, so I'll shut up now. Mostly. GO READ! While I catch up on comments. *quails*

Happy Birthday, Prue!!!

I know you're not exactly interested in Supernatural, but it's your birthday and I wanted to write you something. So, even though I'm a little rusty, I give you a ficlet about Mssrs. Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail being very silly and boyish. I hope you like it and that you have a fabulous day, hon. ♥
