unamaga: (2008 - i'm asking you to believe)
Back at the rally, after the march had left MLK Gardens, I'd gone back for the car while Brett took photos, and I spotted a very old black man in a sharp Sunday suit walking slowly at the very back of the huge march. He hadn't yet arrived at the voting center, and I decided to find him when I got back.

I wanted to go talk to him, to ask him what this moment meant to him. He was a guy who you take one glance at, and know, that guy's seen it all. I wanted a quote. I had my journalist hat on. I thought, this will be great.

So when I got back to the voting location with the car, I went to find him in the line. Eventually I spotted him, and was ready to walk up the few feet between us and introduce myself when I stopped in my tracks.

A young black boy, no more than eight years old, walked up to this man, who was at least eighty. The boy offered the man a sticker, probably an "I Voted" sticker, but I couldn't see. The man took the sticker and paused. Silently, he looked down at the boy, who was looking back up at the man. The man put his hand gently on the boy's head, and I saw his eyes glisten.

I didn't ask the man for a quote. I didn't need to. I walked over by myself, behind the community center, and I sat down on a bench next to the track, and wept.

It's not just me seeing that "which states have you visited" meme pop up on her flist and freaking out at all the red states, right? After a minute I calm down, but every single time my heart freezes up with fear and I think somewhere, somehow the Democrats have fucked it up all over again. I need to find my happy place, you guys, I can't take much more of this craziness.

Anyway, I know I've been sort of MIA lately - due to a number of events and unevents, some more pleasant than others - so here are a few things you should know:

  1. [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches, I am still working on your beta. I am the slowest beta ever! I'm so sorry! But I haven't forgotten it if you were worried, and it should be done by the weekend.

  2. Happyfest entries are due in five days! Fahgoijwfg, woot happy fic! I'll admit, I'm probably more excited about these stories than I am about Halloween candy. John/Rodney > chocolate, y/n? Justify.

  3. Lims voting for this week has started! I have no idea how I managed to fumble my way this far in the competition, but there you have it.

  4. Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday and sent me ecards and virtual gifts. You are all made of awesome, and I would like to extend my squishiest hugs to you for making an otherwise blah day much more bearable. I love you all, you know that?

  5. On that note, a belated birthday rec: Coupling, by [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse (NC-17). Warning: this fic contains lethal levels of amazing, no I'm serious. Lederhosen! *squeaky noise of glee* Go read it if you haven't already!

  6. While in the city this weekend I bought a ZOMBIE MCCAIN SHIRT. Epic lulz. I've already been stopped three times for wearing it, it's that awesome. When I find my camera, I'll take a picture of me wearing it while making a zombie face, which, not gonna lie, will probably only be terrifying because of the fact that I bashed my nose with a cabinet door today and now it's kind of swollen. Can you dig it.

  7. John Sheppard is fierce.

Sung by John Sheppard in an attempt to woo Rodney McKay, y/n?

Last night I rewatched the entire debate in my dreams, start to finish, the only difference being that Bob Schieffer was a minotaur. Yeah. Either I've been spending too much time watching PBS (entirely possible) or the vodka was a bad idea (more likely). At least the fuzzy sense of well-being kept me from crying or kicking my TV during critical moments. :D?

Speaking of alcohol, in a few days I will legally be allowed to drink it. *kermit arms* It's weird sometimes to realize I'm so young when I feel like a crotchety nana croaking at the news stations about the good old days. Whatever, I'm excited. And I have no idea what the hell to do to celebrate, since no plans are forthcoming. Ideas?

In other news: Ted Nugent, you're a peach.

Uncle Ted said journalists are mostly "left wing, f****** hippies" who have never—not once—represented him fairly. He called Claire a wench with an agenda. After that, things only got more interesting. )

Right. Okay.
unamaga: (heaven to me)
Hi, all! Remember that super awesome McShep Happyfest a bunch of you signed up for? Yep, that one. This is your friendly October reminder post, letting you know you have a little over three weeks until the November 1st posting date. Don't freak out, you can totally do this! We have confidence! And to encourage you, we're opening this post up for recs, cheerleading, idea-bouncing, and all that fun fest stuff. More about that at the end, though; first, [livejournal.com profile] chopchica and I have each come up with our top five fest-compliant fics to give you some inspiration and/or a reason to procrastinate. Fridays are made for procrastinating, after all!

In which we ramble lovingly. )

Now. About that fun fest stuff. We're hoping to turn this post into a kind of fest in its own right. Writers are encouraged post snippets or "OH GOD I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING"s so that everyone else can bring out their pom poms and cheer them on. Happy fic recs, whether they be fest-compliant or not, are welcomed with open armed delight. And if you're having trouble finding a beta or you need someone to hold your hand, there are probably plenty of volunteers floating around!

And lastly: pimp this if you can! We don't know how all the participants got to us the first time around, but we'd like everyone to see the reminder. Here are two smaller buttons if you want them, feel free to hotlink. :D

This piece is for the "witch" prompt, completing a line bingo up the left side of my card for [livejournal.com profile] art_bingo. It's gone through so many incarnations I've lost count and the interpretation is...loose at best, but I'm kind of almost proud of it. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] villainny for inspiring this to begin with ("Nnnnny, what should I do for my witch proooommpt?" "SOMEONE DROPS A PUDDLE JUMPER ON THE WICKED WITCH!!!" "Oh dear."), and for holding my hand when I needed it.

Put 'em up, put 'em up! Which one of you first? I can fight you both together if you want. I can fight you with one paw tied behind my back. )

unamaga: (come with me if you want to live)
  • Is there someone around willing to help me with my last [livejournal.com profile] art_bingo piece? I'm having a little bit of trouble meshing all the bits together and could definitely use a beta.

  • I'm trying to make cupcake pops. "But, Mel," you might say, "you're really going to try to bake after The Brownie Fiasco of 2007?" I know, I know, but so far, I've had no trouble with the cake or the chocolate. However, I wanted to use melted peanut butter chips for the top half - probably my first mistake - and the peanut butter is being...less than cooperative. I followed the directions on the back, but it's still thick and gritty and none of the chocolate tricks I know (add drops of veggie oil, etc) are helping. Also it's gotten so hot on the bottom that it's starting to have a mousse-like consistency. Ajaw;oigjf, I've been working with it for over forty minutes now and nothing's going right. Is it worth it, or should I just dip the whole damn things in chocolate?

  • For your pains, here is John Sheppard being ridiculous.

unamaga: (the road so far)
When did it get so frelling cold out? Just last week it was t-shirt weather and right now I am in all seriousness contemplating fishing out my scarf and gloves. I'm already wearing a hat and my ears are still cold! My fingernails are turning a strange purplish color! This is unacceptable. Also I can't get these crackers open.

But in other, less pathetic news: SPN last night rocked my socks, homg! I don't think I've been so pleased with this show and these characters in a long time. So, naturally, I made icons. Twenty two in all, lots of Deanface.

When the bells ring twelve times in hell, the bells ring twelve times in this town as well. )

And now I am off to beta fic of yay while the end of S1 SGA downloads. [livejournal.com profile] melloniel? You and I have a date with the Sieges sometime this weekend. *points*
unamaga: (you i love it's you)
I present to you a McShep photo essay in six parts. May it bring you grate lulz.

Part One: The Come On )
unamaga: (*mfeo*)
I continue to fail at social interaction and, in fact, life! Big surprise! Sorry to anyone I was awkward in the general direction of today. Hopefully this bout of ridiculousness will pass soon, or else I might be forced to suffocate myself with pie. It would make for an interesting obituary, at least, right? Yeah.

In lieu of anything more interesting to post about, here's the next piece for my [livejournal.com profile] art_bingo card, filling in the "haunted house" square. It sort of turned into a haunted hotel, but I figure that's about the same thing. Resources here, and thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] villainny for persevering in the face of my frustration towards Rodney's face - at this point, I think I might owe her at least a third of my soul for services rendered. Considering [livejournal.com profile] kashmir1 owns another third, and [livejournal.com profile] amberlynne and [livejournal.com profile] chopchica seem to have an unnatural influence on the remains, I'm not sure where that leaves me. McShepping until my hands fall off?

True love never lives happily ever after - true love has no ending. )
unamaga: (and cover)
Yesterday sucked, so today I'm posting my first [livejournal.com profile] art_bingo entry, whee! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] villainny for suffering through this in varying stages of completion, and for only raising her eyebrows placidly when I became deranged with exhaustion mid-fursplode. For the "werewolf" box on my bingo card.

Got a curse I cannot lift, shines when the sunshine shifts. )
unamaga: (don't mess with torren's mommy)
I've gone and signed up for [livejournal.com profile] art_bingo because apparently there are no limits to my insanity. It's fun, so far! Although in the one I'm working on now Rodney's face is being problematic and refusing to proportion itself like it should. I think I might make an art beta filter. Not too sure how often I'd use it, since I have a tendency to work straight through on something until it's done, but it would definitely be useful for cases like this, where I cannot figure out why Rodney looks twelve or how to fix it. SIGH, RODNEY MCKAY. SIGH. So difficult.

Anyway, I know I haven't answered comments on my last post (I am made of fail), but I'll get to those in the next hour or so if no random pastrami monster rises up from this sandwich to eat me, so. Possibly a meme? Maybe? I'm a bit too curious about this one to pass it up, even though I'm not exactly a serious writer.

What, if you read my fic, is/are the characteristic(s) that stand(s) out the most?
unamaga: (a ray of adorable sunshine)
This is unprecedented for eleven o'clock on a Saturday morning. I've already been up for a ridiculous number of hours, which is so very not like me, eaten pizza for breakfast (delicious and nutritious!) and fumbled my way through the first few hundred words of my happy fic. What's going on? I don't know. Possibly I've slipped into an alternate dimension. To combat the weirdness, I'm reposting a small comment ficlet written yesterday for [livejournal.com profile] melloniel, whose battle with her recliner was inspiring.

Untitled Chair Ficlet
McKay/Sheppard, R ~620 words

The department store was vast and baffling, and the two of them had spent the better part of that morning and afternoon blindly stumbling from one section to another, tossing whisks and shower curtains into their overflowing cart and arguing over the shade of blue the area rug for the front room should be. )

Annnd, here's a small bunch of icons, mostly of people making amusing or shocked faces. Because that's so how I roll. Twenty eight all together: eighteen John, four Rodney/David, four Teyla, one Elizabeth, one McShep.

Mmmm, faces )

In other news! I've decided to go on a movie binge this weekend, try to catch up on all the culture I missed growing up in the nineties. So far I've watched Singin' in the Rain and Who Framed Roger Rabbit - as, um, I'm sure you all noticed yesterday - and right now I'm twenty minutes into The Maltese Falcon. What else should be on my list, do you think?

*hoardes popcorn and blankets*
unamaga: (it's the kidding!)
unamaga: i would do jessica rabbit. srsly.
Villainny: hahahahahaha EVERYONE WOULD
Villainny: straight, gay, John Sheppard.
Villainny: EVERYONE.
unamaga: TRUFAX
unamaga: john sheppard wants to BE her, though
Villainny: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG
Villainny: THAT IS WHAT YOU SHOULD MANIP
Villainny: XD
unamaga: OH MY GOD
Villainny: HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
unamaga: OH MY GOD WHY AM I OPENING UP PHOTOSHOP

Later...

unamaga: ARE YOU DEAD?
Villainny: I AM DEAD
unamaga: I WARNED YOU

I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that gay. )
unamaga: (oh john)
I was planning on spending a few days mostly cut off from the internet, but while searching for stock and JFlan photos to work on my artword entry, I came across this one by tor0908 on flickr and, dudes. You seriously need to see this. I haven't been able to physically make myself look away for over half an hour.

unamaga: (two faced)
Welcome to the signups for happyfest! We're your mods, [livejournal.com profile] unamaga and [livejournal.com profile] chopchica!

What is happyfest, you may ask? Why, it's a fest for long and happy fic, set in the canon SGA universe! We've noticed that a lot of the long and plotty fics written in the last three years have either been chock full of angst, or AUs, and we started wondering how to get ourselves some long and happy fic - fic where there are romps and adventures, and hopefully some really, really hot sex.

Then it occurred to us; make other people write it for us! [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches put a poll in the field asking if anybody would even sign up, and the answer was yes! Now here we are!

So, want to write a long happyfic? This is what we're looking for. )
unamaga: (TOO MUCH CUTE)
If you haven't popped over to [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon's birthday celebration at [livejournal.com profile] catenip, you're missing out, dudes. As well as some truly adorable and sweet presents involving boys, the outpouring of love is just heartwarming. Aw, fandom. <333 I've left my own little contribution here:

*smooch*
unamaga: (2008 - i'm asking you to believe)
Right, so, I should probably have something interesting and deep to say, but all I can think about is:

The times are too serious, the stakes are too high for this same partisan playbook. So let us agree that patriotism has no party. I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and independents, but they have fought together and bled together and some died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a Red America or a Blue America -- they have served the United States of America.

So I've got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.

America, our work will not be easy. The challenges we face require tough choices, and Democrats as well as Republicans will need to cast off the worn-out ideas and politics of the past. For part of what has been lost these past eight years can't just be measured by lost wages or bigger trade deficits. What has also been lost is our sense of common purpose. That's what we have to restore.

We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. You know, passions may fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. But this, too, is part of America's promise -- the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.

I know there are those who dismiss such beliefs as happy talk. They claim that our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life is just a Trojan Horse for higher taxes and the abandonment of traditional values. And that's to be expected. Because if you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.

You make a big election about small things.

Yes. Just yes. *deep breath*

whee!

  • The fall fandom free-for-all!

From [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis's post: this is a multifandom, fanworks, free-for-all! Basically, request any piece of fanwork you would like – fic, art, icons, video – in any fandom. In return, you offer to make something for someone else. This is the opportunity to see that fic you've always wanted written, to clear the pipes of your own unused ideas by making someone else write them for you, to get new icons for the new season!

Based on the fact that it has already secured me a John/Rodney bodyswap fic: this is freaking awesome. Plod on over if you'd like and start requesting things. Unless my internet gives out, I'll be trolling the comments. And, uh, just in case, here's me.

  • Um. I seem to be spending a lot of time in Photoshop lately? Woops. This one's for my darling [livejournal.com profile] kashmir1, who stays up till nine in the morning with me to write porn. ♥

waiting for your moment, G )
